Joe Ellis Bio

Executive Team Member: Joseph F. Ellis
Title: President & CEO

Joe is the visionary founder, president, and CEO of TEDS, Inc. and the pioneer of the fully integrated software suite for talent management. A life-long entrepreneur, Joe launched CBM Technologies in 1980 following his graduation from Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia. The company, a technology & consulting firm, focused primarily on systems development & consulting for large-scale automated manufacturing and warehousing processes.

In 1990, Joe began working on the concept of People Resource Planning©, analogous to today’s Talent Management. His company began designing and building a comprehensive suite of products whereby large, multi-national companies could track employee talent development. As a result, Joe created the industry’s first recognized learning management system (LMS), subsequently known as TEDS. Under his leadership and with input from the TEDS Consortium, TEDS built our Talent Management solution organically to include all modules in one single-platform database.

Today, TEDS is used in over 145 countries with more than a million users, and is recognized as “the only fully integrated system addressing enterprise-wide talent management” [Bersin & Associates].

Joe is internationally recognized for his professional expertise and personal commitment to talent management, business processes, and technology. His visionary leadership has played a key role in many areas of talent management worldwide.

A 1979 graduate of Emory and Henry College, Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a triple major in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and a minor in Physics.  He has served on the Board of Visitors of Emory & Henry College since 1991, and in 2004, was awarded a special alumni citation in recognition of his service to both the college and his community.

Joe serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Economic Bridge, Inc., a private, nonprofit entity that fosters business, industry and educational partnerships to promote economic vitality and competitiveness throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is a member of the Virginia Department of Education’s Math & Science Advisory Board and is the founder and CEO of the Ellis Family Foundation which is dedicated to charity work and historic preservation. He is a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
